Start with how your business sells
Both WooCommerce and Shopify can support an online store, but a useful decision starts with the business itself. Who updates products? Where is inventory maintained? Who reviews an incomplete order? At AURENIQ, these questions belong in project scoping before design and extension selection.
WooCommerce runs within the WordPress ecosystem on a hosting environment that needs management. Shopify is a hosted platform whose capabilities depend on the chosen plan and configuration. That difference does not remove the merchant’s responsibility for content, catalogue quality and operating workflows. Neither is a universal winner for every business.
What to compare in practice
A platform comparison becomes useful when each criterion has an example from your own operation. Instead of asking for an ERP integration, describe what moves, in which direction and what happens when a product cannot be updated. The table is a starting point, not a technical specification or a quotation.
Capabilities, limits and service terms can change. Check current documentation and application compatibility before choosing. An extension with a matching name does not establish that it supports your product variants, pricing rules and operational exceptions.
| Criterion | WooCommerce | Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting and updates | Assign responsibility for WordPress, extensions and hosting. | Hosted infrastructure; review theme and app responsibilities. |
| Customisation | Implementation control, with development and maintenance effort. | Theme, app and API customisation within available platform limits. |
| Integrations | Test extension compatibility and custom workflows. | Check the app, plan, API and supported scenarios. |
| Operating budget | Hosting, extensions, support and updates. | Subscription, apps, external services and required support. |
| Changing platforms | Inventory data, extensions and custom components. | Check exports and the data held by each app. |
Day-to-day management belongs in the project
Ask for a demonstration of frequent staff tasks: adding a product with variants, replacing an image, checking stock and handling a cancellation. Record the steps and permissions involved. A store looks different to a customer and to the person resolving orders every morning.
At handover, the business should know what staff can change themselves and when support is needed. For WooCommerce, include update procedures and compatibility checks. For Shopify, clarify app management and the effects of theme changes. In both cases, document responsibility, access and a recovery procedure after an unsuccessful change.
Test an entire order, including exceptions
Illustrative example: a home-improvement store uses variants, inventory in a separate system and courier delivery. Before selecting the platform, prepare a test order containing two variants and an inventory change. Check the information reaching administration, the external system and notifications.
Repeat the journey for a failed payment, a request submitted twice and a product becoming unavailable after checkout begins. Decide who sees the problem and how it is corrected. This is an AURENIQ evaluation scenario, not a claim that a particular integration already exists or a measured client outcome.
Compare total cost for the same scope
List initial implementation, hosting or subscription, applications, payment processing, integrations, support and maintenance together. Separate fixed costs from usage-dependent ones. A simple store and one with bespoke commercial rules do not represent equivalent scopes.
AURENIQ does not infer a universal project rate from a licence price or publish an assumed market average here. A budget follows clarification of catalogue, roles and workflows. For the decision, prepare a first-year estimate with explicit assumptions about content entry, included integrations and support.
Plan exports and a future platform change
Before launch, ask how to export the products, customers and orders you need and who retains administrative access. A product export is not a full-store backup. Design, settings and application-held data may require separate recovery or migration steps.
Shopify documents product CSV exports; a migration still requires checking other necessary data rather than relying on that file alone. For a WooCommerce project, inventory the database, files and dependencies. In both cases, perform a sample export and check that the responsible person can read and use it.
A short platform-selection brief
If the choice remains unclear, prepare five representative products and an order containing a real operational exception. These examples are more useful than a long feature checklist. Remove personal information and secrets from material shared for an initial review.
At AURENIQ, this brief can frame a first release and the integrations requiring validation. A responsible recommendation explains why an option supports the business process, its trade-offs and what still needs testing before launch.
- Catalogue: product types, variants and required fields.
- Operations: responsibility for inventory, orders and returns.
- Integrations: existing systems, test access and an owner.
- Running the store: content, support, updates and recovery.
- Acceptance: a complete order and the exceptions to resolve.
Common questions
Is WooCommerce always cheaper?
The software price alone cannot settle this. Compare implementation, hosting, extensions and support for the same scope.
Does Shopify remove maintenance work?
The infrastructure is hosted, while catalogue, apps, theme and integrations still need responsibility and review.
Can a store connect to an ERP or courier?
Check the specific provider, API, plan and required scenarios. An available app does not guarantee every workflow.
Which platform does AURENIQ recommend?
The recommendation follows catalogue, processes, integrations and operating budget; one platform is not selected for every project.
